AI Agent
What is an AI agent?
An AI agent is an intelligent system capable of reasoning, planning, and acting within its environment. Unlike static LLM outputs, AI agents are provisioned with tools, memory, and orchestration layers that let them take meaningful actions, not just respond or generate text or other modalities.
Why are AI agents important?
AI agents extend large language models (LLMs) and generative AI (GenAI) beyond simple Q&A into autonomous, goal-driven, task-oriented workflows. By combining reasoning with tool access, agents can:
- Take initiative to achieve objectives without constant human prompting.
- Call APIs, query databases, and integrate with enterprise systems.
- Coordinate multi-step, multi-tool tasks that mimic human workflows.
This makes them the backbone of scalable AI-native applications, from customer service and DevSecOps automation to research copilots and enterprise orchestration.
